Overview Edit

Black Clouds & Silver Linings is the 10th studio album by American progressive metal band Dream Theater. It was released in June 2009 on Roadrunner Records and reached number 6 on the US Billboard album charts, whilst also charting in Canada, Japan and much of Europe. Three versions of the album were made available - a 6 track standard version, a 3-disc special edition (containing the original album, a bonus disc of 6 cover versions entitled "Uncovered 2008/2009" & a third disc containing alternate instrumental versions of the six original songs) and a limited edition collectors box set. The latter included both triple CD and double vinyl versions of the album, along with a DVD Audio disc of all the individual instrument tracks for each song, a lithograph of the album cover artwork and a specially designed mouse mat. Only 14000 copies of this deluxe box set were manufactured.

This album would be the last to feature the band's drummer & co-founder Mike Portnoy, who would leave the band the following year.

Despite my high expectations, this album does not disappoint in any way. The album has six tracks ranging from Wither (5:25) to The Count of Tuscany (19:16). As someone who loves lon…

3 stars (Almost) a Return to Form
Dream Theater's 10th studio release finds the band in top form musically. Most of the amazon reviews are correct - this is possibly the best DT album since Scenes from a Memory. It is engaging without being overwhelming (as Scenes is often accused of), fresh without being forced (as Train of Thought is often accused of), and diverse without suffering from incoherency (as was certainly the case with both Octavarium and Systematic Chaos). The arrangements generally avoid the "dueling keyboard and …
