Overview Edit

Jagged Little Pill is the third studio album (and the first to be released internationally) by Canadian singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette. The album marked a shift in style and genre for Morissette from her previous dance pop sound. As detailed in the article about the seventh track, "You Learn", the title is a metaphor for lessons of life that are hard to accept. The album was Morissette's breakthrough album, and contained five hits, "You Oughta Know", "Ironic", "You Learn", "Hand in My Pocket", and "Head over Feet".

The album is considered one of the most successful albums of all time for its many commercial achievements, received awards and cultural resonance, worldwide. The album garnered great success, spending twelve non-consecutive weeks at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 albums chart. By 2009, the album had sold 33 million units worldwide.

In October 2002, Rolling Stone ranked it number 31 on its Women In Rock - The 50 Essential Albums list, and in 2003 the magazine ranked it number 327 on its list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The album also holds a title in The Definitive 200 Albums list, in which it is placed at number 26.

"You Oughta Know" is a playable track on Rock Band 2. "Head over Feet" and "Ironic" are available as downloadable content for the Rock Band series.

5 stars Angry on the surface but empowering at its core
When you talk about the biggest albums of the 90s, you certainly have to talk about 1995's Jagged Little Pill. Alanis Morissette, to my mind, came to represent a version of the new woman of the 90s, leaving no questions as to her feelings and, some might say, demands. Decades ago, Aretha wanted R-E-S-P-E-C-T, but Alanis wants much more than that, and as far as I'm concerned, she deserves it. Apparently, at least one guy did Alanis wrong at some point; some women get mad, some get even - Alanis h…

Alanis Moriesette presents us with a poser. Either you will love her honest singing style, or you will think she wails like a banshee. I'm still straddling the line myself. Her songs have some genuine hooks (though the fuzzy production is overrated) and emotion. As an earlier reviewer mentioned, she doesn't know the full meaning of irony, nor does she present a context for it; the chorus of "Ironic" might as well be "and isn't irony ironic - if I knew what it was." However, the B-part of that so…
