Overview Edit

Surfacing is the fourth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan. Released in 1997, it was produced by Pierre Marchand in Quebec.

It was McLachlan's bestselling album to date, debuting at number one or number two on the Top 40 charts in many countries, and confirming her star status in many countries, most notably the United States where her 1993 album Fumbling Towards Ecstasy had been a steady seller but hadn't fully established McLachlan as a mainstream pop star. It was released to favorable reviews as McLachlan embarked on the Lilith Fair concert tour.

The album received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album, which was awarded to James Taylor's Hourglass, however the singer won the Best Pop Instrumental Performance award for the track "Last Dance" at the Grammy Awards of 1998 . According to the website Acclaimedmusic.net Surfacing is the 2525th greatest album of all time.

The track "Do What You Have to Do" entered the news in 1998, when it was cited in Kenneth Starr's report as the subject of a letter from Monica Lewinsky to Bill Clinton. The song "Angel", a single in 1999, enjoyed renewed visibility in 2001, when it became popular as a song of comfort and healing following the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. Rapper DMC of Run-DMC stated that this album helped save his life and turn his life around during a deep depression.

5 stars "Surfacing" is a stellar, heartfelt work of art!
Originally, I purchased this album, without knowing much about the artist, because I really liked the song "Building A Mystery. I played "Building A Mystery" over and over for a long time, then I listened to the rest of the disc and was astounded. Every song on "Surfacing" is thoughtfully written and uniquely beautiful. Personally, I believe that the best song on this CD is track #2, "I Love You". With its unique instrumentation, superb acoustic guitar solo (by Sarah), and expressively sung lyri…

3 stars Worth buying but not a must-buy
Before reviewing Surfacing i tried to be as careful as possible . I know that Mclachlan's records have sold millions of copies and that her songs mean so much to so many people and i truly respect that . After repeated listenings of all of her albums for more than two years , i've come to this conclusion : a best of complication with selected tracks from all her offerings would have been an essential piece of pop music . Individualy though , her releases are surely well-crafted and satisfying bu…
