Cronian is a side project of Borknagar's Oystein Brun and one Mr. V (aka Vintersorg), also of Borknagar. Given the players involved, it shouldn't come as too great a surprise to find that Cronian sounds very much like recent Borknagar albums.

I agree this is more prog than black. For me, the clean vocals are horrible, and the extreme screeches don't fit the often symphonic tunes. I like plenty of (symphonic) black metal, doom metal, and goth metal, but this would be better as an instrumental album for me. Lyrics range along the winter metal border. Very mellow, with nothing extreme but the part-time black metal vocals.
