Overview Edit

Spellbound with aggression, the fourth studio album from Rise Against, The Sufferer & the Witness, attacks the listener with a sense of despair that happens to be far from hopelessness. From knowing the ideals of the band, it is easy to understand how The Suffer & the Witness becomes an outcry for change in the world we live. For those who do not know, the members of Rise Against are vegetarians and avid supporters of animal rights. They are also strongly against war, along with the use of alcohol and other drugs. With a dissimilar punk rock attitude and a hardcore sound, the band’s fourth album is the strongest example of the mind-set put forth in the name of the band itself.

Matching catchy guitar riffs with heavy bass playing and fast drum beats is always an easy approach to creating a punk rock album. What Rise Against does is use all of these elements to the best of their ability with the highest adrenaline possible. Each song on The Sufferer & the Witness embraces the aforementioned ideals and, as most punk rockers do, makes the problem as loud as possible. “Ready to Fall” and “The Good Left Undone” are prime examples of this. While this approach may come off to be superficial, the true emotion that Rise Against puts into each composition gives the band a powerfulness that is almost unmatched by their competitors. Maturing as a band musically in creating a listenable continuum also helps Rise Against become more unique throughout The Sufferer & the Witness. Vocalist/guitarist Tim McIlrath uses less screaming vocals from his previous works (Rise Against and The Killing Tree albums respectively), but his strong presence is still felt. Tim possesses the necessary abilities, in actually having a large vocal range, to outmatch most singers in today’s punk music. In slowing down just a bit, but not losing any emotion, in songs like “Roadside” and “The Approaching Curve”, the album exemplifies integrity by expressing its emotion without coming off as just noisy. A livid expression of independence interweaved with personal tribulations, The Sufferer & the Witness heads off other recent albums in hardcore and punk music.

5 stars The completion of a band's evolution to greatness
I was all prepared to accuse Rise Against off selling out after the release of their single "Swing Life Away" from "Siren Song of the Counter Culture," released in 2004. But after listening to their 2006 album "The Sufferer and the Witness" I realize that they haven't sold out, they have simply outgrown the limitations of the punk-genre. And it's all good.

2001 saw the release of "The Unraveling," a quality punk album with 16 tracks clocking in at under 37 minutes. (Do the math.) With 2003 came…

3 stars Such a drastic change from Siren Song....
This is a LONG review, but if you want an honest take on " Sufferer And The Witness ", then read on...

I first started listening to Rise Against when they released their highly acclaimed " Siren Song Of The Counter Culture ", loved by music fans of all genres. This album was great because it offered so much variety within its catchy tunes. All the songs were good, except " State Of The Union " and " Swing Life Away ". Of all the cd's I own, Siren Song is near the top of the list of my favorites…
