Biography

Edit

Alt-rockers 30 Seconds to Mars were initially perceived as a side-project for actor Jared Leto, but their subsequent success has now flipped that idea; did you know rock star Jared Leto is also an actor?

30 Seconds to Mars were formed by brothers Jared Leto and Shannon Leto in 1998. They were joined by Matt Wacher (bass) and finalized by Tomo Miličević as guitarist in 2003. At the time Jared was already gaining credibility as an actor, with several film and television roles on his résumé.

Their first album, 30 Seconds to Mars, was released in 2002 to moderate reviews, which was not so surprising as actors dabbling in music have often produced excruciating results and 30STM were handled with extreme caution.

However, their second release A Beautiful Lie (2005) found its way on to the Top 40 of the US and UK album charts, and it certainly seemed that their alt-rock sound was appreciated by the CD-buying public.

To support the album they embarked on a lengthy tour, but unfortunately Matt Wachter announced his departure from the band during the tour. He has since joined Angels and Airwaves, as formed by ex-blink-182 frontman Tom Delonge.

30 Seconds to Mars

Sep, 29 2009

Determined to give a little back to their fans, 30 Seconds To Mars invited willing travelers to mass recording sessions in April so that fans could sing on their forthcoming release, This Is War. For those fans who couldn’t make it, or who know they can’t carry a tune, the band has created another opportunity to be on the album. Fans are invited to take mugshots of themselves and upload them to the official 30 Seconds To Mars website; the first two thousand who do so will have their picture featured on one of two thousand different album covers. In an interview with AOL Spinner, frontman Jared Leto said “I thought that the ‘Faces of Mars’ campaign would be a way to acknowledge all the people who have supported us throughout the years.” The album itself has already caused a great deal of controversy, with their record label Virgin filing a $30m lawsuit against the band last year because the lateness of the record allowed the band to terminate their contract. The lawsuit was eventually halted, resulting in renewed expectations for an imminent release: it was initially expected in April, then September, then October; now it’s been put back to the end of November. Is that enough time to design and manufacture an album with two thousand different covers? Eager fans may have to wait quite a while before they get their fractional moments of fame.

30 Seconds to Mars

Aug, 19 2008

Most people have spheres of excellence and trying to diversify rarely works well. An exception to the rule is Requiem for a Dream actor Jared Leto, whose career as a singer with 30 Seconds to Mars gained attention simply because it didn’t make everybody’s toes curl. Sad then, that recent news suggests that the band is facing a $30 million lawsuit for failing to deliver on their contractual promises. Poor old Virgin Records was expecting three albums and so far, only two have materialised, with the last A Beautiful Lie surfacing in 2005. Whether a third album appears after the run-in with the legal boys remains to be seen, but it may be that music’s loss will be acting’s gain.
