Biography

Edit

Curtis Jackson III, known more commonly as 50 Cent, is an internationally successful hip-hop star, actor and businessman. Also, he is well known for having been shot nine times, and for being involved in many feuds with rappers, such as The Game, Ja Rule and Fat Joe.

50 had a very troubled childhood in Queens, New York, and by the time he was a teenager he was dealing crack cocaine and heroin, and carrying weapons. After a 6-month stay in a boot-camp, he met Jam Master Jay from Run-DMC and decided to turn his life around through hip-hop. He recorded an album Power of the Dollar which featured a popular underground single called "How to Rob", but neither album nor single were ever fully released after someone made an attempt on 50's life. He miraculously survived nine shots from close range, and after a lengthy recovery came back with a popular compilation called Guess Who's Back?.

Eminem heard the record and helped 50 Cent get signed to Interscope. His first commercial album, Get Rich or Die Tryin', was released in 2003 to great anticipation. It was a huge success, selling almost a million copies in its first week, and has now sold around 12 million worldwide. Lead single "In Da Club", co-produced by Dr. Dre, was an international hit. After this success, Interscope created a subsidiary label for 50, which was called G-Unit Records, and 50 promptly signed up Lloyd Banks, Young Buck and Tony Yayo. G-Unit released an album called Beg For Mercy that was a huge hit.

2005 was a busy year for 50. First, G-Unit released The Game's hit album The Documentary, and 50 Cent himself released The Massacre, which was another incredible commercial success, selling over a million copies in just four days. 50 also starred in a biopic film of his life, named after his first Interscope album, released a video game based on his life, and Tony Yayo released a solo album on G-Unit too.

In 2007, 50 released his third major solo album, called Curtis. Again, it performed well in the charts, selling nearly 700,000 copies in its first week. However, it was met with mixed reviews, with many critics suggesting it was his weakest album yet.

Stranger Than Fiction Friday: 50 Cent's Uninvited Guests

Dec, 24 2010

While passing rapper 50 Cent’s multi-million dollar Connecticut mansion early Tuesday morning, security guards noticed an out of place car in the driveway. Further investigation lead the police to two of Fiddy’s fans who’d scaled a fence and let themselves inside through an unlocked door. Did 50 set up himself for this a while ago? Police found Alexander Hernandez, 19, and Santos Padilla, 21, still hanging out at 6 a.m. "with marijuana in their possession." Hernandez was found "hiding in a closet, drinking a bottle of wine he had stolen from the residence," according to a press release from the Farmington Police. Both men subsequently said they had no intention of stealing anything; they just wanted to “hang out” in one of their favorite rappers’ houses. Each was charged with third-degree burglary, second-degree criminal trespassing and possession of marijuana. Bail was set at $50,000 each. Hernandez was turned over to cops in New Britain, CT where he’s wanted in connection with an attempted murder. Fifty was not at home at the time of the break-in. The rapper has been trying to sell the estate, which he bought from boxer and ear-enthusiast, Mike Tyson in 2003. The 50,000 sq ft, 19-bedroom, 37-bathroom house is currently on the market for $10 million. Think you know hip-hop better than these guys? Try our Hip-hop Quiz -Court

50 Cent

Poor old 50 Cent has been left feeling devalued by the shadowy MTV News Hip Hop Brain Trust, who ranked him as number nine on their list of the Top 10 Hottest MCs in the Game. In an interview with New York radio station Hot 97, he told an interviewer: “I think I'm number one. I'm in the top five, at least. I'm my favorite, if you ask me. These other guys are cool, but not as cool as me.” MTV reveals that “The list is meant to reflect what is going on right now as opposed to a career retrospective,” and factors in measures of worth which include lyrics, flow, impact, buzz, sales, and a nebulous something-else which MTV calls “the intangible.” The final ten-to-six placings are being revealed a day at a time until October 4, when the top of the list will be announced during P. Diddy’s Starmaker program on MTV. So far Fiddy has trumped Raekwon, who just squeezed on to the foot of the list thanks to his new album, the belated Only Built 4 Cuban Linx: Pt. II; but he is trailing behind Fabolous, who was placed at number eight, and Young Jeezy, who landed at number seven.

50 Cent

Jun, 2 2008

News that 50 Cent’s house burned to the ground should be quite alarming. Until, that is, you learn that the house was at the centre of a bitter ownership dispute between the rapper and his ex-partner. It would appear that Shaniqua Tompkins, mother of 50 Cent’s 10 year old son, Marquise, felt that she was owed the house following their relationship breakdown and had been occupying the property -- until it was razed to the ground in suspicious circumstances last Friday. 50 Cent, who doesn’t live at the house, expressed his concern in a recent statement, but one feels that there is more than one alarm bell ringing in this news item.
