Biography

Edit

In the 80s Madonna achieved notoriety for her flagrant sexuality, which saw some tag her as a soft-porn star who happened to sing. She deliberately courted controversy to stay in the limelight, but her songs were so memorable that she would've been a star anyway, and her ever-changing persona has kept her at the top ever since.

Madonna Louise Ciccone Ritchie, better known as Madonna, has been many things in her long, multifarious career, among them: singer, songwriter, musician, dancer, music and film producer, fashion designer, film director, nude model, author and actress. This unconventional, groundbreaking artist has redefined herself time and again, playing the roles of virgin, playful sprite, sex-kitten, fashionista, and more. It has been this ability to regenerate that has enabled the ever youthful 'Queen of Pop' to climb to the top of the pop-superstar heap and stay there, fighting off competition from younger rivals all the way. Her effect on modern pop culture is undeniable, influencing millions of young girls, their brothers, mothers and fathers.

In her near 25-year career she has only released eleven studio albums, two live albums, and three soundtracks. She has had 37 Top 10 hits (the most for anyone on Billboard Hot 100), 12 making it to No.1, and sold more than 200 million albums worldwide, making her the most successful female recording artist of all time. Her music has evolved along with her image, from bubble-gum pop to sexually empowered boy-toy, and through self-reflecting mother, to disco diva. Her distinctive style always goes part and parcel with her music -- in fact to many her fashion was more important than her music.

It was her second album, Like a Virgin (1985), that launched her into the bubble-gum pop arena. Madonna's signature style consisted of bleached, teased hair, layered lace tops over light T-shirts or just a bra, combined with skirts over Capri pants with layers of jewellery, crosses, beads and chunky chains, with bulky pendants, lace gloves and black rubber bracelets and silver bangles. Like a Virgin went on to produce several hit singles, most notably "Like a Virgin", "Dress You Up" and "Material Girl" - the latter would become a nickname for her used by the press for the rest of her career.

She continued her rise up the ladder to megastar status with both her next release True Blue, and by co-starring in the hugely successful movie Desperately Seeking Susan. The album was warmly received by critics, unlike Like a Virgin, and spawned several more hit singles including "Papa Don't Preach" and "La Isla Bonita". The movie was styled on the underground new wave movement in New York, from which Madonna's signature style was inspired. Desperately Seeking Susan exposed her fashionable style and independent, devil-may-care attitude and music to millions more people, and the single she recorded for the film, "Into the Groove", became her first UK hit song.

Her fourth studio album Like a Prayer (1989) would see her height of popularity before she redefined herself for the first time. Critically hailed by many, Rolling Stone magazine said Like a Prayer was 'as close to art as pop music gets'. However, the video for the title song was denounced for its use of Catholic iconography and scenes depicting 'blasphemous' images, such as Madonna developing stigmata, making love to a black Jesus, and witnessing a cross burning. On the other hand, the video was also hailed for its stark messages about faith, racial equality and rape. The album also spun the hits "Express Yourself" and "Cherish".

Her next project was the Oscar-winning film Dick Tracy, in which she played the part of Breathless Mahoney, and the accompanying soundtrack I'm Breathless. The only notable single was a track that seemed stuck on to the end, as it had nothing to do with the film: "Vogue" was and still is one of Madonna's best known songs and one of the most successful singles of all time.

In 1992 Madonna reinvented herself as a sex-siren by releasing the carnally themed album Erotica and accompanying book Sex. Erotica was a concept album, with each song exploring a different path of the labyrinth of human sexuality. The book contained images of Madonna and a host of other models, in sexually explicit scenes, running the gamut from simple nude photos to soft-core pornographic situations. Both Sex and Erotica proved to be highly controversial and commercially successful.

In 1996 Madonna starred as Eva Perón - the 'Spiritual Leader of the Nation' of Argentina - in the Oscar-winning film adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber Broadway musical Evita, enjoying major success from the accompanying soundtrack. In 1998, she released her seventh studio album Ray of Light, her most critically successful album. It was yet another reinvention for the singer with personal, mature self-reflective lyrics about motherhood, fame and her burgeoning spirituality. The album featured many Eastern sounds, electronics, and more down-tempo songs deviating from Madonna's usual danceable fare. The album spawned two Top 10 hit singles, "Frozen" and "Ray of Light", and won the singer and her producer William Orbit several Grammy Awards, including Best Dance Recording, Best Short-Form Music Video and Best Pop Album. The artwork won its art director a Best Recording Package.

Her 2000 album, the 3x platinum Music, produced Madonna's 12th #1 hit on Billboard Hot 100. The album spawned several Grammy nominations including Record of the Year and Record of the Year for Music and Best Short-Form Music Video for Don't Tell Me. The album won the Best Recording Package for a Madonna album the second time.

In 2005 Madonna reinvented herself once more as a disco-diva for the release of her tenth album Confessions on a Dance Floor. The album not only spawned several hits (most notably "Sorry", "Jump" and "Hung Up"), but also sparked a renewal of interest in disco among mainstream music fans. It also won the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album. The accompanying tour, The Confessions Tour, won the Grammy for Best Long Form Music Video. Madonna's eleventh studio album, Hard Candy (2008), sold almost 300,000 copies in its debut week, easily topping the charts.

Madonna's Pop Career On Hold

May, 6 2010

While Madonna has withdrawn from the public eye a little, the Madonna-a-likes of the Queen of Pop-themed episode of Glee have earned a huge amount of media attention. The Material Girl herself enjoyed the program, telling Us Weekly that the episode was “…brilliant on every level. The dialogue and the entire script was genius. I completely appreciated the layers of irony, especially when all those macho boys sang ‘What It Feels Like For A Girl.’” In a recent chat with Interview Magazine, Madge focused on her latest pet project: a feature film she’s co-writing and directing about the relationship between King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom and American divorcee Wallis Simpson, which forced the King to abdicate in December 1936. The movie, titled W.E., is taking priority right now. “I haven't really been focused as much as I should be on the music part of my career” she said, “because this movie has just consumed every inch of me.” Interest in Madonna’s back catalog has been renewed since the high ratings of the Glee episode, but as one of the highest-earners in pop, Madge can afford to ignore the opportunity to cash-in, and instead continue with her filmic plans. “Between that and my four children,” she said, “I don't have the time or the energy for anything else.”

Madonna may be 51, but she’s showing no signs of heading for a quiet retirement. As the queen of re-invention, her career continues to flourish and her latest album Celebration is indicative of a story that has continued to enthrall and challenge across the last quarter-century. Evidence of her refusal to settle into the complacency of middle age includes a punishing fitness regime, a toy-boy lover and, it seems, complaints from the neighbors about the volume of music coming from her bedroom. Karen George lives upstairs from Madonna in a central Manhattan apartment block, and she has had quite enough of the "unreasonably high-decibel, amplified music" which is coming from the apartment below. As a result she has filed a lawsuit against the buildings co-op board in the hope that they will take action to restore a little quiet to her life. Madge’s reaction is not yet known, but as one of the planet’s richest performers, and with several homes at her disposal, she should be able to turn the sound down at her Manhattan home and allow the older generation to enjoy a little peace.

They say that bad luck comes in threes, and even though Madonna is a mega-superstar, it seems even she can’t evade fate. In July she was “devastated” to learn that two workmen were killed when a stage they were building for her gig in Marseille, France, collapsed; and in August she was booed by thousands of paying fans during her Bucharest, Romania concert after she made supportive comments about eastern European Gypsies. The very next day, during her gig in Sofia, Bulgaria, she fainted during her performance of “Holiday.” Though she recovered quickly, reports indicate that she fainted again offstage later in the performance. Insiders allegedly told UK tabloid The Sun that “Madge was really worried backstage. She had to sit down for a longer break than usual between songs. She refused to end the show or take a break after the ‘Holiday’ dizzy spell. It turns out she's suffering from exhaustion. She is anemic.” The sinewy singer looks to be fighting fit, but at 51 years old, with a menagerie of children to care for, a divorce-in-process, a new 22 year old boyfriend, a world tour and the fickle fortunes of fate to deal with, it’s no wonder she’s feeling a little light-headed. Take it easy Madge!

Two people have died in the French city of Marseille after a stage they were constructing for an upcoming Madonna show collapsed. Charles Prow, 23 from Britain, and Charles Criscenzo, a 53 year old local, were building the stage in the Stade Velodrome when the partially built roof of the stage fell, dragging a crane down with it. Eight more technicians were seriously injured, with one, an American citizen, thought to be in critical condition in hospital. A further 30 workers suffered minor injuries. Madonna was about to perform in Udine, Italy, when she heard the news. She emotionally spoke to the crowd, saying ""Before I continue the show, I just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge and pay tribute to two people who lost their lives today. When they were building my show in Marseilles where we're playing next, we don't know why, but one of the cranes fell, a piece of the stage fell down. Two men lost their lives. It's a great tragedy to me, I feel so devastated to be in any way associated with anyone's suffering. Let's all just take a moment to say a prayer for Charles Criscenzo and for Charlie Prow, two men who lost their lives today. Our hearts go out to their families, to their loved ones. Please, let's all just take a moment to appreciate life in general."

Though Madonna seems to be dedicated to helping African children one at a time, the recent earthquake in Italy has encouraged her to help an entire village in one fell swoop. The 6.3 magnitude quake has resulted in nearly 300 deaths and was centered on the medieval city of L’Aquila. It also devastated the small village of Pacentro, which happens to be the hometown of Madonna’s paternal grandparents. The Mayor sent a personal plea to the town’s most famous grandchild and she responded with a significant donation, reputed to be in the region of $500,000. In an interview with People.com, the singer confirmed that "I am happy to lend a helping hand to the town that my ancestors are from. My heart goes out to the families that have lost loved ones or their homes."

Few surprises were revealed in Billboard’s list of 2008’s top moneymakers. The top spots were packed full of mainstream goodness, with Madonna, Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen sitting pretty on top of piles of money. But its not just grizzled old stars in their middle years that are banking pretty: fresh blood was represented by Disney pophunks The Jonas Brothers and tween-qween Miley Cyrus at numbers 9 and 15 respectively. At a time of doom, gloom and global recession it’s good to know that the recording industry is surviving in spite of having endured yet another year of decline in recorded-music sales. It seems that the main money is to be made at the box office and if you want to earn big bucks, the best answer is to take it on the road; a lesson learned by every single one of the top moneymakers during 2008, to their benefit – and ours.

Madonna has had quite a year. She directed her first film, Filth and Wisdom, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and embarked on the Sticky & Sweet Tour in support of her eleventh full-length release, Hard Candy. But although the album leapt to the top of the charts in over 25 countries across the world, and the accompanying tour was one of the top grossing of the year, the only Madonna story many will remember from 2008 will be the breakdown of her marriage to British film director Guy Richie. This week, it was announced that Richie will be awarded $76M as part of the divorce settlement, far eclipsing the comparatively paltry $38.5M paid earlier this year by former Beatle Paul McCartney in his divorce from Heather Mills. With an estimated personal fortune of $490M Madonna can certainly afford the money; and if the crowds she's still able to draw to her live shows are anything to go by, it'd only take a few extra dates to recover the costs.

Just two days before Madonna's debut movie as a director is released in American cinemas, a statement from her representatives has confirmed that she will split from her director husband, Guy Ritchie. The Englishman, 40, whose own new film RocknRolla is due for widespread release at the end of the month, had previously denied rumors of a rift in their relationship, but reports in a British tabloid newspaper on Wednesday morning seem to have prompted the announcement. The couple were married in December 2000 in a remote Scottish castle, and have two children: Rocco, 7, and David Banda, who was adopted from Malawi two years ago. Madonna, 50, whose movie Filth and Wisdom follows a Gypsy punk band played by real-life Gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello, is currently in Boston as part of her Sticky & Sweet tour.

Madonna's eleventh studio album Hard Candy had done rather well - it's topped the charts in 27 countries, including a 280,000-sales debut week in the US. That was nearly three times as much as nearest challenger Mariah Carey, with balladeering Brit Leona Lewis in third. Madonna celebrated by announcing a new world tour, which she will kick off in the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, on August 23rd - a week after her 50th birthday. The tour will travel around Europe before crossing the Atlantic in October, finishing in Miami, Florida, on November 26th.

At last, the material girl’s new album hits the stores and expectant fans can finally find out if the queen of re-invention has done it again. Madonna has rarely failed to deliver and the pre-release reviews of Hard Candy have served only to whet the appetite. Lead single "4 Minutes", featuring Justin Timberlake, has already sailed to the top of the charts in many countries across the world and it shouldn’t be long now before we find out if the public taste for Hard Candy will follow.

Madonna and other artists (Leonard Cohen, John Mellencamp, The Dave Clark Five and The Ventures) will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday. "The 2008 inductees are trailblazers -- all unique and influential in their genres," said Joel Peresman, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation president. "From poetry to pop, these five acts demonstrate the rich diversity of rock and roll."
