Mer de Noms is the debut album by American rock band A Perfect Circle. The album was released under Compact Disc format on May 23, 2000. It was certified platinum by the RIAA on October 31, 2000. The album entered the Billboard 200 at No. 4 with over 188,000 copies sold in the first week, making it the highest ever Billboard 200 debut for a rock band's first album. The album stayed on the charts for 51 consecutive weeks. The album peaked at No. 27 on the Billboard Top Pop Catalog Albums on October 4, 2003, three years after the album's release.

5 stars A Perfect Album?
APC have been both blessed and cursed by comparisons with lead vocalist Maynard James Keenan's other band, the excellent Tool. However, these comparisons aren't exactly justified. Perfect Circle is Perfect Circle and Tool is Tool. Both bands are unique, and their only real connection musically is through Maynard's vocals, which here sound far more vulnerable and emotional than his usual style.

3 stars Overall, a fantastic album (3.5 STARS)
Being a long time fan of Tool's strange, unique sound, I was pleasantly surprised when I put forth the effort to get this. Maynard doesn't seem to miss a step in his home-band's impressive string of successful and inspiring albums, with APC's "Mer de Noms" hitting on the pop side of alt metal, a la "Aenima."
