Hip-hop luminaries A Tribe Called Quest have released five albums since forming in 1988, the first three of which were hugely critically acclaimed and influential. Featuring MC's Q-Tip and Phife Dawg, and producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad, their debut album wasn't a success at first and was met with mixed reviews. People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm (1990) took six years to reach gold sales, and was only retrospectively viewed as a great album. It also featured the song that they are best known for outside of hip-hop circles -- "Can I Kick It?".
Second album The Low-End Theory (1991) was instantly hailed as a classic. Embodying the group's distinctive jazz-rap style, it covered various socially aware themes and is now known as one of the most important hip-hop albums ever. Third album Midnight Marauders (1993) reached the Top Ten of the Billboard charts and was also widely praised, though most reviewers didn't consider it to be quite as good as The Low-End Theory.
Beats, Rhymes and Life (1996) topped the charts but wasn't considered by critics to be as good as their previous work, but The Love Movement (1998) saw a brief return to form before the group disbanded. In 2006, they reformed for a tour and plan to release a sixth album soon.
