Overview Edit

The Complete Studio Recordings is a box set of all the studio albums released by Swedish pop group ABBA. It was released on 7 November 2005 and consists of 9 CDs and 2 DVDs.

The first eight CDs include each of the band's studio albums, plus all non-album singles and B-sides, and versions in Spanish, German, French and Swedish. CD 9 contains a selection of rarities, most of which were originally released after the band's heyday. Of particular interest is the rare alternate mix of "Waterloo", which has never been available on CD before. The extended mono version of "On And On And On"—featuring an extra verse and previously only available as the soundtrack to the song's video—is also released on CD for the first time. The nine CDs comprise every single studio-recorded piece of music commercially released by the Swedish group (under the name ABBA and/or Björn & Benny, Agnetha & Anni-Frid/Frida) on single, LP or CD, including alternate mixes. Edited versions and extended versions (that did not feature alternate mixes) have been excluded.

The box set also includes 2 DVDs, featuring all the promo videos ever released by the band, The History documentary, which covers the overview of the ABBA story, and a previously unreleased concert, which was originally a part of the television special Dick Cavett Meets ABBA, a co-production between Polar Music International and Sveriges Television (SVT). Five of the performances from Dick Cavett are included on the DVD. The original concert consisted of nine songs, but the remaining four performances are no longer to be found in the SVT archives.

A 2006 reissue of the box-set omits the 2 DVDs.

5 stars you must know this fact
The remastering of ABBA's music (supposedly from original analogue tapes) on this mammoth box set is the best I've ever heard - there is a transparency and depth missing from even the recent 24-bit remasters (I think a different process and source materials were used). So if you want to hear ABBA at their best, this set provides the goods

2 stars Rather disappointing
Getting all ABBA's CDs in a box set for $100 sounded appealing to me. But, I'm more interested in fidelity of sound than in fancy packaging. The lyrics to all the songs are not included in this set. None of them are. Also, the remastering here is significantly inferior to European imports produced in the summer of 2001, in my opinion. I think the remastering on the "Waterloo" import from June 2001 is the best I've ever heard on an ABBA CD, even though the disc appears to be CD-R. With the above …
