Biography

Edit

Adele is the latest graduate from the BRIT School for performing arts in London, which has so far spawned successful singers such as Amy Winehouse, Leona Lewis and Kate Nash. After Winehouse’s huge success, Adele was fast-tracked to the charts thanks to her similar soul-influenced sound.

London-born Adele Adkins was singing and writing songs from a young age, making her an ideal applicant for the BRIT School. Thanks to the international success of Amy Winehouse in 2007, similar singers such as Adele and Duffy were soon sought by record labels, leading to Adele earning a contract with XL. Her first single, “Hometown Glory”, reached the Top 40, but her profile earned a massive boost when a BBC-run critics poll to find the stars of 2008 put Adele at the top. She also won a BRIT Award that was specially created to recognise up-and-coming stars. Subsequently, her second single “Chasing Pavements” reached No.2 on the UK charts, and her debut album 19 reached No.1.

Can Your Musical Taste Determine Your Level of Promiscuity?

Jul, 7 2011

Is the music you listen to a good predictor of your luck in love? Tastebuds.fm matches up users based on what music they like and recently measured dating users’ popularity using its “Lucky In Love” index. Far from scientific precision, the index measures incoming messages, replies to outgoing messages, and profile views. According to their algorithm, Adele fans were luckiest in love. Next up were Kings of Leon fans, Arctic Monkeys appreciators, and those of The Strokes. Those most unlucky in love tended to be fans of Metallica. Ouch. Of course, this data kind of slightly contradicts a previous poll about how far users would go on a first date. The scale – again, nowhere near scientific – had three options: “I’d only meet up for a chat,” “Perhaps a kiss,” or “I’d go all the way if the mood was right.” These answers were compared with users’ tastes in music. Least likely to “go all the way” were Coldplay fans followed by Adele’s, Lady Gaga’s, Katy Perry’s, and the Kings of Leon’s fans. So I guess Adele and the KoL’s fans are just incorrigible flirts. According to Tastebuds.fm, most likely to be up for a little slap and tickle were Nirvana fans followed by Metallica, Linkin Park, Kanye, and Gorillaz’s fans. So, you know, take that for what it’s worth…. But I maintain, it’s way more fun to meet someone at a show by one of your fave bands and take it from there. -Court

Stranger Than Fiction Friday: Adele’s Ex Asks for Royalties

May, 13 2011

In news that will make you go “Hunh?” this week Adele’s ex-boyfriend, the man who inspired her debut hit album, 19, reportedly asked her for royalties on the record. Though she refuses to name her ex, she told The Sun, “Well, you made my life hell, so I lived it and now I deserve it… He really thought he’d had some input into the creative process. I’ll give him this credit – he made me an adult and put me on the road that I’m travelling.” 19 was released in 2008, but is still riding high on the charts. The British songstress recently released 21, which also documents her tumultuous love life, and the album has been at No. 1 in the US. It has topped the British charts for 14 weeks. -Court

New Music Tuesday: Adele’s 21 and Breaking Records

Feb, 22 2011

Back in November, Adele posted a link to a makeshift video for her upcoming single, “Rolling in the Deep” and the world collectively got excited for her sophomore effort. 21 was released in the United States Tuesday, and is expect to fare very well on the charts. The album came out across the water a month ago, and has been at number one for four weeks straight. In fact, Adele is the first artist to simultaneously have two Top 5 albums and two Top 5 singles in the U.K. since The Beatles in 1964. 21 is a collection of powerful songs about heartbreak, written when she was 21 years old (2008’s 19 was written when Adele was 19 years old). Adele, now 22, recently told MTV News, "It broke my heart when I wrote this record, so the fact that people are taking it to their hearts is like the best way to recover.” On the album, she pairs up with veteran producers Paul Epworth (Cee-Lo Green, Kate Nash, Florence and the Machine), Frasier T. Smith (Taio Cruz, Keane) and One Republic frontman Ryan Tedder. -Erin O.
