A Fire Inside are a US punk band formed in California in 1991 by vocalist Davey Havok, guitarist Mark Stopholese, drummer Adam Carson, and bassist Vic Chalker (later replaced by Geoff Kresge, who was then replaced by Hunter Burgan).
The band's debut EP Dork was released in 1993 while they were still at school, after which they took a break to finish their studies. When they realized that they would rather be in a band they reformed and released the Behind the Times and This is Berkeley EPs.
Their debut album Answer That and Stay Fashionable was released in 1995, although it was the follow-up Very Proud of Ya that brought the band wider acclaim. Tracks from it were used in the 1996 film Mary Jane's Not a Virgin Anymore, an independent production in which Havok had a small part.
After line-up changes and the release of Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes, the band turned to darker influences, described as gothic punk, for their Black Sails in the Sunset album. The track "Total Immortal" from the All Hallows EP was covered by The Offspring for the film Me, Myself and Irene, which helped to bring their music to a larger audience and generate some chart success. The Sing the Sorrow album went to No.5 on the Billboard chart, eventually going platinum. One of the tracks, "Girl's Not Grey", earned the band an MTV Award for the video.
The follow-up Decemberunderground built on this success, debuting at No.1 on the Billboard album chart, while the single "Miss Murder" went to No.1 on the Modern Rock chart.
