Overview Edit

Sing the Sorrow is the sixth album by American rock band AFI, released in 2003. The album reached the #5 position on the Billboard charts, and was certified Gold on April 30, 2003 by the RIAA. The album went Platinum in December 2004. The album was supported by singles "Girl's Not Grey" and "The Leaving Song, Pt. II", both featured in the top 20 of America's Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart in 2003. It was ranked number 77 on the October 2006 issue of Guitar World magazine's "List of the 100 Greatest Guitar Albums of All Time". It was also the first release by the band to be released through a major label.

Sing the Sorrow differs considerably from AFI's earlier material. The band's sound shifted towards alternative rock, characterized by more elaborate production, slower tempos, and pieces of industrial music. The album also includes more experimental segments, such as the inclusion of a spoken word poem accompanied by haunting piano music, and the ending of "This Time Imperfect" which features guitar parts played backwards and extensive sampling.

5 stars high energy, high quality, highly addictive
Leaving Nitro, and signing with Dreamworks, AFI changes their style somewhat and not for the worst. Thought to have sold out by many of their long-time hard core fans, AFI enters new territory on their musical journey with Sing the Sorrow. AFI has done anything but "sell out." I've been a fan since Black Sails in the Sunset, and this album did not dissapoinment me in the least. It's true their first single, "Girl's Not Grey," is probably their most radio friendly song ever, but it's still AFI an…

3 stars AFI dips into the main stream
AFI made their major label debut with Sing the Sorrow, and became one of the "coolest" new bands on the MTV scene with their singles "Girl's Not Grey", "Silver and Cold", and "The Leaving Song Pt. 2". Sing the Sorrow is a solid introduction to the veteran punk band for those not in touch with any underground music. AFI's music has continued to progress, and fans of their previous release, The Art of Drowning, will love the emphasis on hard-edged guitars and soaring melodies on Sing the Sorrow. I…
