Alain Boublil is the Tunisian born librettist whose best known works include Les Misérables and Miss Saigon.
Boublil moved to Paris from North Africa, aged 18 where he took a job in music publishing. His love of musical theatre led him to team up with songwriter Claude Michel Schönberg for their first musical La Revolution Francaise, France's first rock opera. After the success of the venture the pair got together again to write Les Misérables after two years work they opened in Paris in 1980, where it was a huge success, playing to packed houses night after night.
Boublil went to London in 1983 to work with Cameron Mackintosh on Abbaracadabra, a musical based on the songs of Abba. This was another big success and in 1985 he joined with Mackintosh again, for the English version of Les Misérables, which has been the most successful musical productions staged, playing to worldwide audiences and also earning Boublil two Tony Awards and two Grammys.
He had further hits with Schonberg with Miss Saigon and Martin Guerre for which he received the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best new Musical.
