Biography

Edit

Canadian-American singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette was propelled to international stardom with the release of Jagged Little Pill (1995), an accomplished album of radio-friendly rock that seemed to dominate the charts and airwaves forever.

In 1986 Morissette released her debut single, which she paid for by using money raised from acting on the Canadian kids TV show You Can't Do That on Television. She had to wait until 1991 to take her next step on the ladder which was the release of debut album Alanis when she was just 16. It was very popular in Canada where it went platinum and earned her a Juno award. The follow-up Now is the Time (1992) was not as successful. During this period the young Morissette was pressurised by her management to lose weight, which led her into eating disorders and deep unhappiness.

Morissette found baring her soul in songwriting to be therapeutic and this change of direction resulted in the 1995 smash Jagged Little Pill which brought Morissette success all over the world. The album's success was assisted by the string of hit singles including "Ironic" and "You Oughta Know". The album sat in the Top 10 of the Billboard album chart for over a year and won four Grammys. Ultimately Jagged Little Pill went on to sell over 30 million copies, making it one of the biggest-selling albums of the 90s. That success was always going to be hard to follow up, and its successor, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, didn't grab the audience to the same extent, 'only' selling seven million copies.

Four years would pass until the release of her next album, during which time she returned to acting, playing God in Kevin Smith's film Dogma. After two more album releases, the Juno award winning Under Rug Swept and So Called Chaos, Morissette revisited her biggest album by releasing Jagged Little Pill Acoustic (2005).

Morissette has since returned to acting and in addition to her theatre work she has had roles in the TV series' Sex in the City and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
