fun with the old catalogI think everyone should own every one of the original LX solo albums, and this misses most of my favorites of Alex's solo songs (hunt down the French import "Stuff" collection for something more to the tastes of a fan like me), but it's still a good introduction. Not as good as "A Man called Destruction" or "Set", but it doesn't overlap with either of those classics. You could use it to supplement them, and the notes and pictures are great.
Almost dreadful/Big Star to one starAmongst my group of friends long ago, after Paul Westerberg's ode to this mysterious Memphian, "Alex Chilton" was one of those names you tended to hear in certain "hip" circles and it seemed he was some underground, barely discovered genius that only the truly cool knew about. After listening to the Big Star albums (of which a few songs are represented here), it seemed ol' Alex could do no wrong.
