Biography

Edit

Neo-soul singer Alicia Keys saw 2008 in by celebrating triple platinum certification for third studio album As I Am, released less than two months previously. Recently she has combined her musical career with acting, with roles in Smokin' Aces and The Nanny Diaries.

Alicia Keys learned to play the piano as a child and graduated from the Professional Performing Arts School at the top of her class. She chose not to graduate from University, instead signing a demo deal with Columbia, though it foundered fairly quickly. Before the release of her debut album, she co-wrote and recorded the song "Dah Dee Dah (Sexy Thing)" which was used in the film Men in Black, and the songs "Rock wit U" (Shaft) and "Rear View Mirror" (Dr. Doolittle 2).

She eventually signed to J Records and released Songs in A Minor (2001). It was a huge hit from the outset, with the first single "Fallin'" spending six weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. Reviews of the album were positive and five Grammy wins followed. In 2002 Remixed & Unplugged in A Minor was released, a recreation of her debut.

The next studio release was 2003's The Diary of Alicia Keys which was enjoyed by both the critics and the music-loving public who purchased more than eight million copies worldwide. Four further Grammy awards followed.

Keys took part in the successful MTV Unplugged series and the album of this performance was released in 2005. However fans had to wait until November 2007 for her next studio album, As I Am, which topped the albums chart in its debut week with sales of almost 750,000.

Alicia Keys: Your Favorite Artist Has Been Silenced

Nov, 30 2010

Starting Dec. 1 - World AIDS Day - you won’t be getting any status updates or Tweets from Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Hudson, Justin Timberlake, Swizz Beatz or P. Diddy. These artists and numerous other personalities from the film, television, music and fashion worlds are all committing digital suicide, demonstrating solidarity for those who have died of AIDS in Africa and India. Stars have agreed to sign off from all social networks until fans “buy back their digital lives” by donating to the Keep A Child Alive fund, explained the charity’s co-founder Alicia Keys. An estimated 33.3M people worldwide had the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS in 2009, according to the latest figures issued by UNAIDS, up from 26.2M in 1999. Donations to Keep A Child Alive help with the monitoring of adults and children using anti-retroviral therapy drugs and the care for the estimated 15.2M orphans created by this tragic pandemic. Bono acknowledges "Times are hard in the Western world… In recessionary times, people have to tell their politicians this is important to them," the Irish rocker and campaigner told Reuters. The silence of a these stars is incomparable to the voices silenced by AIDS over the past 30 years; please give generously.

The next James Bond spy thriller, Quantum of Solace, will have a duetted theme for the first time ever. Alicia Keys and Jack White have teamed up for "Another Way to Die", which was written by White, who also produced and played drums on the song. Quantum of Solace hits big screens across the world on November 7, with the soundtrack due to appear in shops a full 10 days prior. The announcement ends speculation that Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson were working on the theme. Let's hope that "Another Way to Die" does better than the last Bond theme, Chris Cornell's "You Know My Name", which was a flop despite the huge success of Casino Royale.
