Overview Edit

Amy Grant's Age to Age was still riding high on the Christian charts and with her becoming one of the first CCM Artists to be certified Gold and Platinum as a solo artist, A Christmas Album was a natural fit, as a follow-up release. Amy had wanted to record a Christmas album very early on in her career. The thought was that she would be able to record a trilogy of Christmas LP's during her career, which she accomplished. Being a first for Amy, with then husband Gary Chapman, they wrote the first song Tennessee Christmas on a drive back from the East Coast. Amy enlisted Chris Eaton, and Michael W. Smith for the songs Little Town and Emmanuel. Heirlooms became an instant classic and Love Has Come helped with the edgier sound of a soon-to-be classic. Recorded at Caribou Ranch, where Chicago recorded, as well as Elton John, this was a special time for Amy. Bringing her entire family to the ranch, Amy recorded during the nights and played during the days. A Christmas Album would be certified Gold and Platinum, securing her place in the recording industry history books.

5 stars The classic "Christmas Album" by Amy Grant from 1983
The idea that Amy Grant could put out a great Christmas album is hardly surprising, but the fact that she had a hand in writing four of the songs on this classic 1983 collection should raise some eyebrows. The scope of "A Christmas Album" is laid out in the first three tracks: "Tennessee Christmas," the first of the songs co-written by Grant, the traditional Mendelssohn hymn "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," and a German carol "Preiset Dem König!" This album was released when Grant was pretty much…

3 stars Amy Grant's freshman Christmas effort quite good
This is the first, chronologically, of three Amy Grant Christmas albums. Each subsequent album is better than the one before. Highlights of this album, for me, are her cover of Michael W. Smith's rather sparse "Emmanuel" and a new musical setting of the lyrics for "O Little Town of Bethlehem" - very fresh and somewhat exhilirating. I also enjoy the lovely "Tennesse Christmas" which I first heard performed by the country group Alabama.
