Biography

Edit

British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber is responsible for some of the best-known works for the musical theatre: among the highlights of his award-winning career are Evita, Cats and Phantom of the Opera.

Webber teamed up with lyricist Tim Rice on a couple of projects before they had success with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. This was the start of a highly productive relationship which soon resulted in Jesus Christ Superstar, which was originally released as an album with Ian Gillan as Jesus. Another Rice/Webber production, Evita, was a huge hit as a stage musical, while the film version which starred Madonna had a Top 5 hit in the US with the soundtrack album and won an Academy award for "You Must Love Me". Other spin-off successes have come from Cats, which produced "Memories", while Phantom of the Opera gave us "Music of the Night".

Webber has also had success in the classical sphere, winning a Grammy for the Requiem Mass, written for his father. The track "Pie Jesu" was a Top 30 hit for Webber's wife Sarah Brightman. Keeping it in the family, he teamed up with his brother, cellist Julian Lloyd Webber, for Variations. The album, which is variations on a theme by Paganini, made it to No.2 in the UK and featured performances from Gary Moore, Phil Collins and Rod Argent.

In recognition of his work, he became a Sir in 1992 and was then promoted to Baron in 1997, for services to music.
