Andy Williams is the American singer whose voice was described by Ronald Reagan as "a national treasure". His gold and platinum albums testify to his enduring appeal among a public who love a bit of crooning.
His career began as one of a quartet, The Williams Brothers, and they were successful enough to appear with Bing Crosby on the single "Swinging on a Star". By 1952 his brothers left the act and Williams was solo. His early releases failed to perform well but he finally hit the top spot of the charts with "Butterfly". This unleashed a series of chart successes for him, although he never hit No.1 again, even with his signature song, "Moon River". Nonetheless, during his glory days in the 1960s and early 1970s he was one of the most popular artists in the US.
His star burned brightly again in 1999 when a re-release of his 1967 album Music to Watch Girls By hit the charts again in the UK, following its use in an advert campaign.
