Angélique Kidjo is the African singer and producer who has the word ‘diversify’ as her word of the day, everyday. Be it language, musical style or her choice of collaborator, Kidjo has adopted them all during her career.
Kidjo was born in Benin, on west coast of Africa. Her childhood was spent with the theatre group her mother managed, and with whom the young Angélique performed. In her teens she formed a band, and the success of Les Sphinx led to a radio appearance and the opportunity to record an album.
Her debut, Pretty, was a huge success all over Africa, and she relocated to Paris to launch her international career. After a spell with as the lead singer of Paris-based German funk/jazz band Pili Pili, appearing on several of their albums, she branched out on her solo career with the Parakou album in 1989. The album was a mix of soul, reggae, zouk and jazz, and the melting pot approach to music would be carried through her subsequent albums.
In addition to diverse musical styles, Kidjo has also worked with a range of artists, including Miriam Makeba, Brandford Marsalis, Dave Matthews and Carlos Santana. She has not turned her back on Africa completely however, she worked with Camroonian sax player Manu Dibango and over 100 Benin artists for her most recent album Fifa.
