Biography

Edit

Animal Collective are an experimental group who produce a beautiful and challenging type of music that has made them critical darlings in recent years.

The members met each other during their school and college years in America, where they swapped tapes of their solo music and assimilated ideas from each other.

The membership of the band is as fluid as the music, with members Avey Tare (Dave Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox) Deakin (Josh Dibb) and Geologist (Brian Weitz) forming the core but dipping in and out as they wish, recording solo records, recording as a two piece, a three piece and sometimes, as The Animal Collective.

They have released several albums as The Animal Collective since 2001 and, for 2005's Prospect Hammer EP, they collaborated with Vashti Bunyan. Their full album of that year, Feels, was considered to be one of their best, but Sung Tongs is also well regarded. In 2007 they released Strawberry Jam to mixed but mostly warm reviews.

Collection Of Polls Favors Animal Collective

Jan, 1 2010

Twelve months ago, indie fans were surprised to see cult heroes Animal Collective almost break the Billboard album chart Top 10: new album Merriweather Post Pavilion reached No.13, a whole 59 places higher than their previous best position, achieved by Strawberry Jam (2007). The reason for the sudden jump was that Merriweather Post Pavilion was winning rave reviews across the board: critics and bloggers seemed to be competing to make ever-grander statements about the quality of the new record and its possible place in history. According to British music retailer HMV, that enthusiasm hasn't dulled with time, as Merriweather Post Pavilion has won their annual poll of polls contest for 2009. By collating the end-of-year polls of 34 different music magazines and websites, HMV found a strong consensus supporting the Animal Collective album, which a spokesman said "sounded like nothing else out there." According to the poll, the second best album of the year was It's Blitz! by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, while debut album xx by young London group The xx finished third. Eight of the poll's Top 10 artists were signed to independent labels.

Animal Collective

If you believe what you read in music magazines, experimental Brooklyn band Animal Collective have just released a modern masterpiece. Merriweather Post Pavillion, their ninth album, has been launched this week on a wave of excitable internet hype and praise-packed reviews. British music magazine Uncut said "It feels like one of the landmark American albums of the century so far," while respected online zine Pitchfork gave it 9.6 out of 10 and described the album as "a new kind of electronic pop-- one which is machine-generated and revels in technology but is also deeply human, never drawing too much attention to its digital nature." The four-piece group, originally from Maryland, Baltimore, have attracted a cult following in recent years, without ever breaking into the upper 70 of the Billboard 200 album chart. The new album, named after an outdoor arena in their hometown, will surely breach that barrier, but it's unlikely to produce any chart-bothering singles: though there has been plenty of praise, their radical approach to making music will perhaps come across as a little too weird for mass consumption.
