Sweet Dreams Are Made Of OBEs
Jan, 4 2011
Former Eurythmics star Annie Lennox has received an OBE (Order of the British Empire) in Queen Elizabeth II's New Year’s Honors list for 2010. The Scottish-born singer was awarded the honor for her many years of charity work with Oxfam, and the founding of the SING campaign, inspired by Nelson Mandela, to raise awareness of AIDS in Africa.
Admitting she was “genuinely honored” to receive the award, the star joked: “As somewhat of a renegade, it either means I've done something terribly right - or they've done something terribly wrong. In any case, whatever powers that be have deemed me worthy of such a recognition, I'm getting my fake leopard pillbox hat dusted and ready." Lennox has over three decades of hits behind her, including "Sweet Dreams," "Here Comes The Rain Again," "Put A Little Love In Your Heart" (with Al Green) and "Walking On Broken Glass."
Other award recipients in the music biz include producer Trevor Horn, who received a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire), the highest honor below a knight or dame. Horn's discography includes "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and Band Aid's "Do They Know it's Christmas?" However, he is probably best known for his own band’s hit "Video Killed the Radio Star", and joked that he would “put my Buggles glasses on” for the awards ceremony in front of the Queen.
