Aqualung is the pseudonym of Matt Hales, an English singer-songwriter born in 1972.
As a teenager he formed several bands and released an album Mecano Pig in 1990. Later, as a music student in London, he formed Gravel Monsters/RUTH/The 45s and released Harrison but achieved little mainstream success.
His solo career met with more success when his first single "Strange and Beautiful" was picked up by Volkswagen for use in their advertising campaign whereupon it reached No.7 in the UK Top 40. He soon released his debut album Aqualung (2002), following it in 2003 with Still Life. Though the albums met with critical praise and his singles found use on films, television shows and advertising campaigns, they achieved only moderate commercial success. A compilation of tracks from his first two albums appeared on 2005's Strange and Beautiful.
His most recent release has been Memory Man (2007).
