Already an accomplished dancer, Ashlee Simpson began to act in television commercials after the family moved to California as a result of her older sister's (Jessica Simpson) record deal. By 2001 Ashlee had begun her acting career in film and television, appearing in 2002's The Hot Chick and the family drama series 7th Heaven.
In 2003 Ashlee recorded "Just Let Me Cry" for the soundtrack to the film Freaky Friday and her recording career began. After signing a record deal with Geffen she released Autobiography in 2004 spawning the hit singles "Pieces of Me" and "La La". Reviews were mixed but the album was finally certified triple platinum and she received several awards including a Billboard Award for New Female Artist of the Year.
In spite of a controversial botched lip synch incident on Saturday Night Live and being booed by 72 thousand spectators at the Orange Bowl, Simpson released her second album, 2005's I Am Me, undaunted. The album failed to perform as well as her first; though it had debuted at No.1 on the Billboard charts sales evaporated fast.
Third album, Bittersweet World was released in April 2008 to a lukewarm critical reception, debuting at No.4 in the charts but slipping fast to the lower reaches.
