Biography

Edit

Band-Aid was a charity supergroup featuring British and Irish musicians and recording artists. It was founded in 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia by releasing the song "Do They Know It's Christmas?" for the Christmas market that year. The single surpassed the hopes of the producers to become the Christmas number one on that release. Two subsequent re-recordings of the song to raise further money for charity also topped the charts. The original was produced by Midge Ure. The 12" version was mixed by Trevor Horn.

Do They Know It's Christmas?

Dec, 21 2010

This week, Rolling Stone compiled their list of the “Greatest Rock and Roll Christmas Songs.” The list included everything from Mariah Carey to The Beach Boys, but our favorite is this gem from 1984. That year all of the best musicians in the world came together to give us the one-time super group, Band Aid. Put together by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, the band was created to aid famine relief in Ethiopia. Little did Bono, Sting, George Michael, Phil Collins, and Boy George know, the massive success of their song Do They Know It’s Christmas would lead to Live Aid the following year. Bob Geldof later stated that he felt responsible for "two of the worst songs in history", referring to "Do They Know It's Christmas" and 'We Are The World," but we sure like them. Think you know Christmas music? You are running out of time to test your knowledge on our Christmas quiz. Take it, and then comment on our Facebook and let us know how you did. -Erin O.
