Barbra Streisand is an American singer and actress born in 1942 whose phenomenal success as a recording artist is reflected in US sales of over 71 million albums and a full-to-bursting awards shelf.
Streisand became a nightclub singer in her teens, running an acting career in parallel. In the same year that she signed her first recording contract, she also made a first appearance on Broadway. Her debut album The Barbra Streisand Album (1963) was an immediate success, winning two Grammys. This success was a precursor to that of the 60+ albums which followed, many of which have achieved multi-platinum certification. She has distinguished herself by having at least one No.1 album during each of the last four decades. Her most recent studio release was 2005's Guilty Pleasures (Guilty Too in the UK), which was a reprise of her successful 1980 album Guilty; both were collaborations with the Bee Gees' Barry Gibb.
In recent years her tours have been newsworthy in their own right, if only for the huge price of their tickets and the enormous revenue generated from them. Although she elected to retire from touring in 2000, she relented in 2006, and in 2007 she made her way to Europe to tour for the first time in 13 years.
Her success as an actress compliments, but does not eclipse, her success as a singer. Funny Girl, a reprise of her Broadway role, was followed by a succession of films including A Star Is Born in 1976, and Yentl in 1983. Recently her big-screen work has been reduced, but she did return to acting for a role in 2004's Meet the Fockers. As with her singing career she has won many awards throughout her acting career, including two Oscars and nine Golden Globes.
