Overview Edit

Dear Catastrophe Waitress is an album by Belle & Sebastian, a Scottish indie pop group, released in 2003 on Rough Trade Records. Producer Trevor Horn, former member of The Buggles and producer of groups like Yes and Frankie Goes to Hollywood, oversaw the production of the album, and gave it a more polished, pop-friendly sound. This stood in sharp contrast with their previous lo-fi, folky albums (although songs like "Lord Anthony" hearkened back to their old sound.) In particular, the danceable track "Stay Loose" proved to be the first in a series of songs (such as "Your Cover's Blown" and "Sukie in the Graveyard") that further diverged from their roots.

The album was nominated for the 2004 Mercury Music Prize, while the song "Step into My Office, Baby" was shortlisted for an Ivor Novello Award in the Best Song category.

5 stars Not Belle & Sebastian you're used to, but wonderful
Like most veteran fans of Belle & Sebastian, I worried about this CD for months before it came out. Would the band evolve away from all the things we love about them? After learning that this album would be produced by Trevor Horn, my concern was that it would sound much too fake and polished--like a cheap plastic version of their old works.

B&S singer Stuart Murdoch said (on the band's website I think) that in making Dear Catastrophe Waitress, he and the band had an ammount of fun that hadn't b…

3 stars Stay Tuned...
...because this album is a strong indicator that Belle & Sebastian will soon find their footing and release another great album. The downside, of course, is that this one is merely good.

First, let me lay my cards on the table and say that I am one of those people who believes in what another reviewer calls "the holy trinity": Tigermilk, If You're Feeling Sinister, and Arab Strap. Those albums, to me, are classics that I will never put down. Unlike some B&S fans, I actually find their music bett…
