Overview Edit

"Jonathan David" is a single released by Belle & Sebastian on Jeepster in 2001. The lead track gets its name from the biblical duo of Jonathan and David, while "The Loneliness of a Middle Distance Runner" is a reference to Alan Sillitoe's short story "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner." The front cover features band members Mick Cooke and Bobby Kildea with Gill Dodds. All three tracks from the single were later collected on the Push Barman to Open Old Wounds compilation. The title track was the band's first single to feature lead vocals from guitarist Stevie Jackson. The single reached #31 in the UK singles chart.

5 stars The Quintessential Belle and Sebastian
This is, by far Belle and Sebastian's best work. All three songs are perfect examples of the band's varying sounds. The title track is a bouncy, retro sounding pop tune; Bacharach and the Beatles are definitely present here. "Take Your Carriage Clock..." has one of the most beautiful string arrangements I've ever heard, on a B+S record or otherwise. Stewart Murdoch's lyrics tell the tale of a man who can no longer stand his own mundane job and poor treatment. There is a great anger in his voice,…

3 stars This probably would be three and a half stars...
...given the choice.

I bought this on the strength of Loneliness of Middle Distance Runner, having heard it over the Internet someplace. It and Take Your Carriage...are both classic, beautiful Murdoch-led Belle and Sebastian. But Jonathan David has to be one of their weakest tracks released, and certainly my least favorite of their A-sides. It's pleasant enough and has grown on me a little bit, but it's clumsy and never really grabs me.....

Anyway, I still like the band. I hope the next single's a bit stronger.
