Ben Folds Five were the US piano-based, indie-rock trio formed by Ben Folds, with bassist Robert Sledge and drummer Darren Jessee.
The band formed in Folds' home state of North Carolina in 1993. In keeping with their humorous approach to music, they took the name Five and released their self-titled debut in 1995. The critics liked it, especially the witty lyrics, and it sold in sufficient numbers to lead to a contract with Sony. A rigorous touring schedule spread the word aided by TV appearances on shows such as Late Show with David Letterman, and subsequent releases sold well. The band split in 2000 to pursue their own careers.
Folds carried on the success into his solo career, both of his releases to date have been met with good reviews and sales to match, while Jessee went to form Hotel Lights and Sledge joined International Orange.
