Ben Folds Buoys Nashville Symphony
Nov, 29 2010
In May 2010, the city of Nashville was hit with a devastating, widely-unpublicized flood that left many homeless and countless of the city’s musical landmarks compromised or in jeopardy. Ben Folds gave back to the music-rich city in a big way this past Saturday night, putting on a benefit called “Keys to Music City.”
The show benefited the Nashville Symphony’s Schermerhorn Symphony Center, which sustained an estimated $40M in damages during the flood. Of the show Folds said, “This concert is an effort to help keep the recovery in the front of our minds and to help restore our great symphony hall. Of course, a donation to our first responders like our volunteer firemen is in order, too, because without them the Middle Tennessee community would have lost so much more.”
The orchestra, led by guest conductor Francisco Noya, performed with the Nashville local. Folds entertained the audience with his characteristic antics: singing a request from the audience, and teaching the parts to the orchestra as he went. He closed with his heart-wrencher, “The Luckiest,” which, according to one concert attendee, “…made 90% of the audience tear up.”
Folds returned to Nashville fresh off a tour in support of his most recent collaborative album, Lonely Avenue, with English author Nick Hornby.
