Biography

Edit

Ben Folds is the US born singer-songwriter and pianist, formerly the leader of the US indie-rock trio Ben Folds Five. He is known for his smart and humourous lyrics.

Folds tried a number of different things prior to the release of the Ben Folds Five debut album in 1995; after leaving high school, he played bass/piano and wrote songs for indie trio Majosha. They released several EPs and one album Shut Up and Listen to Majosha, after which the band members drifted off to pursue other projects.

Folds moved to Nashville to play as a session musician, and then to the University of Miami, to study percussion, although he left before graduating. Next stop - New York- to try his hand at acting, and then back to North Carolina where he joined with Robert Sledge and Darren Jessee to become (the partially ironically named) Ben Folds Five.

The critics liked their debut, especially the witty lyrics, and it sold in sufficient numbers to lead to a contract with Sony. A rigorous touring schedule spread the word and subsequent Ben Fold Five releases sold well, so the news of their split in 2000 came as a surprise to fans.

While still with Ben Folds Five, Folds engaged in a side project Fear of Pop with a number of collaborators. The album, Volume 1, gave Folds the opportunity to experiment with music and sounds away from the expectations of Ben Folds Five fans.

Since the break up of the trio, Folds has released two well received albums, with good reviews and sales to match. He also made history with his live concert, on Myspace, the first artist to do so.

Ben Folds Buoys Nashville Symphony

Nov, 29 2010

In May 2010, the city of Nashville was hit with a devastating, widely-unpublicized flood that left many homeless and countless of the city’s musical landmarks compromised or in jeopardy. Ben Folds gave back to the music-rich city in a big way this past Saturday night, putting on a benefit called “Keys to Music City.” The show benefited the Nashville Symphony’s Schermerhorn Symphony Center, which sustained an estimated $40M in damages during the flood. Of the show Folds said, “This concert is an effort to help keep the recovery in the front of our minds and to help restore our great symphony hall. Of course, a donation to our first responders like our volunteer firemen is in order, too, because without them the Middle Tennessee community would have lost so much more.” The orchestra, led by guest conductor Francisco Noya, performed with the Nashville local. Folds entertained the audience with his characteristic antics: singing a request from the audience, and teaching the parts to the orchestra as he went. He closed with his heart-wrencher, “The Luckiest,” which, according to one concert attendee, “…made 90% of the audience tear up.” Folds returned to Nashville fresh off a tour in support of his most recent collaborative album, Lonely Avenue, with English author Nick Hornby.
