Berry Gordy

If you haven't yet acquainted yourself with the famous sound of Motown, now is a good time to start, because this year will see a series of celebrations and tributes to the label as it marks its 50th anniversary. It was in 1959 when Berry Gordy Jr founded the record label in the "motor town" of Detroit, Michigan, originally as Tamla Records. It soon became one of the most distinctive and popular labels in the world, thanks to the specialized songwriting skills of the Holland-Dozier-Holland team, and the sparkling personalities and performances of stars like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, Diana Ross and The Supremes. Monday was officially declared Motown Day in Detroit, while stars espoused the genius of Berry Gordy in countless interviews. Motown is going to be all over the media this year, and that sure makes a nice change from the endless woes of the economic slowdown.
