Bette Midler was born in Hawaii in 1945. She is a successful singer, comedienne and actress and has won four Grammy awards, an Emmy award and a Tony award over the span of her career.
In 1970 she started to sing in the Continental Baths, a famous gay bathhouse in New York, where she developed her famous bawdy, funny persona, a heady mix of self-confessed tack and talent. It was her pianist from the bathhouse, Barry Manilow, who went on to produce her first album The Divine Miss M in 1973 which sold well, though she and Manilow fell out afterwards.
She has released many albums over the course of her career including most recently, a Christmas album and an album of Peggy Lee covers. Bette Midler Sings the Rosemary Clooney Songbook recorded after a reconciliation with Barry Manilow, was one of her best selling albums to date and was nominated for a Grammy in 2004.
In 1973 she won the Best New Artist Grammy and in 1989 she won a Record of the Year Grammy for the No.1 hit "Wind Beneath My Wings". "From a Distance", one of her most popular songs earned her a Grammy in 1990.
Success from her recording career notwithstanding, her acting career has been equally successful and includes big 80s films Beaches, Outrageous Fortune and Down and Out in Beverly Hills.
