Biography

Edit

Born in Iceland in 1965, singer-songwriter, producer and actor Björk has incorporated a full range of music styles and collaborators over her career.

She released her debut album aged 11: the self-titled album, sung in Icelandic, was a mix of cover versions and new songs and hinted at the eclectic career that was to follow.

With a number of collaborators and musical styles, Björk had another three albums to her credit by the time she came to the world's attention with the Sugarcubes in 1986. Their first single "Birthday" charted and generated a cult following, helping sales of their first album Life's Too Good in 1988.

In 1992 the Sugarcubes dissolved and she was able to pursue her solo career. Her album Debut, released in 1993, produced her first solo hit single "Human Behaviour" and she was nominated for the BRIT Awards Best International Newcomer. The success of the album opened doors for her and there followed collaborations with artists including Madonna and Tricky.

Björk's follow up album 1995's Post included the single "It's Oh So Quiet" which spent 15 weeks in the UK single charts. Continued sales of the next album Homogenic, released in 1997, meant it went platinum in 2006.

Success was not just confined to music: she has had numerous acting roles including a main role in the Lars Von Trier film Dancer in the Dark, and she has produced a book of prose and photographs, also called Björk.

As a contribution to the South East Asia Tsunami appeal, Björk requested remixes and interpretations of her single "Army of Me". Fans and producers alike responded and sales of the subsequent album, Army of Me: Remixes and Covers, raised money for UNICEF.

She has been recognised for her contributions to music by the Academy Awards, BRIT Awards and The Golden Globes, and received the Palme d'Or for Best Actress at Cannes in 2000 for Dancer in The Dark. Her career looks likely to be successful regardless of what she decides to do.

Artists Seek New Biz Models to Boost Sales

Jun, 28 2011

While technology may slightly level the playing field, it’s still tough to generate global buzz around an album, especially in the age of leaks, $0.99 tracks, file-sharing, and all-around increased competition. It’s not enough to for artists to craft an incredible album; aggressive, creative marketing has become paramount to the product itself. Take, for instance, Lady Gaga, Björk, or David Gray’s new albums. There’s a perhaps erroneous view that if something sells well, it must be great. This is why getting a position on the Billboard or other music charts is so important: mob rules drive sales. It’s the motivation behind Gaga’s Born This Way; Amazon offered the entire album for two days for only $0.99 to increase awareness of the Cloud Music Player. But at the end of the day, many argued it wasn’t all that strong an effort and may not have sold that well without Amazon’s generous subsidy. Similar to the Gaga fire sale, only time will tell if the strategy laid out by David Gray and Groupon, who are offering a greater than 50% discount on Gray’s new 12-track digital album, Lost and Found – Live In Dublin, as well as debuting it, is successful. The deal went live last night and ends today. Last year offered Rihanna’s Loud as a $5 digital download, but this is the company’s first foray into being the sole purveyor of an album. Icelandic chanteuse Björk is harnessing new technologies in the hopes of building buzz around her upcoming iPad-app-slash-album, Biophilia. She recently told Jon Pareles she’s trying to create something greater than the sum of its parts, pushing recorded music to evolve into something interactive. “I definitely wanted the songs to be a spatial experience,” she said. “I’m excited to embrace a different handshake between the object and sound.” -Court

Björk Soundtracks Moomins Movie

Aug, 28 2010

Björk has contributed a new song to the soundtrack to the upcoming children's 3-D movie The Moomins & The Comet Chase. The Moomins are white, bear-like cartoon creatures popular in Finland, and judging by the video for "The Comet Song," the movie features the aftermath of a comet collision near their settlement. All proceeds from the song will be donated by Björk to a UNICEF fund assisting those affected by the flooding disaster in Pakistan. It's the third successive charity release from Björk, following her collaborative EP with Dirty Projectors, Mount Wittenberg Orca, which benefited the National Geographic Society's Ocean Protection Project; while proceeds from Nattura went towards a website of the same name devoted to the development of environmentally friendly technology. According to the press release, "The Comet Song" "comes ahead of new highly anticipated projects from Björk in 2011."

Björk

Jul, 4 2008

Björk fans in Sheffield, England, will have to wait a little longer to see the little Icelandic chanteuse. The singer pulled out of a gig in May as a result of logistical problems, but it seems that she can’t make the rescheduled July concert either. Although she managed to perform for 10% of Iceland’s population at the Náttúra event over the weekend, ongoing throat problems have forced her to cancel the British performances outright. Instead, she will pick up her tour on July 10 in Helsinki.
