Biography

Edit

Blind Melon is an alternative rock band which formed in 1989 and split for over ten years after the death of its frontman Shannon Hoon. Between 2006-2008 the new lead vocalist was Travis Warren who joined the remaining members of the band, Christopher Thorn, Rogers Stevens, Brad Smith and Glen Graham to create a reformed Blind Melon.

The fledgling days of the band were marked by Hoon's duet with Axl Rose on the Guns 'N Roses track "Don't cry" in 1991. Blind Melon was released in 1992 and made little impact until the track "No Rain" hit the charts, whereupon it dragged the album to its ultimate four times platinum certification. Although they embarked on a tour it had to be cut short due to Hoon's increasing substance abuse.

Soup was the follow-up and was released in 1995 to dismal sales in comparison to its predecessor. Shannon's bout with drug addiction finally caught up with him three week into the tour supporting the sophmore record, Hoon was found dead on the tourbus in October 1995.

Nico was released in 1996, named for the 13 week old daughter Hoon had left behind. It was a collection of previously unreleased versions of existing and new tracks and cover versions, all recorded by Hoon prior to his death. Although the band attempted to continue without Hoon, they finally disbanded in 1999.

The band reformed in 2006, with Travis Warren in the front position and For My Friends appeared in 2008. Unfortunately Warren was fired in 2008, leaving the band vocalist free.

In the News

Blind Melon

Nov, 16 2008

The death of singer Shannon Hoon in 1995 was the end for Blind Melon, or so it seemed. But they reformed two years ago with a new singer, Travis Warren (pictured left), and the spotlight was firmly on him to see if he could live up to his predecessor. New album For My Friends (2008) received reasonable reviews, but in a changed musical landscape it wasn't able to make an impact like the multi-platinum eponymous release which featured Hoon at the helm. Now, the band's fans have been hit by the news that Warren has left the band, with the band citing a number of reasons on their MySpace blog. The remaining members have now put the word out for a new singer, asking fans to contact them if they can think of anybody suitable. They know it’s not going to be easy though, “Travis set the bar pretty high. And Shannon?....well that goes without saying.”
