Biography

Edit

Bloc Party are a London-based indie-rock band who were at the forefront of the second wave of post-punk revival in the mid-2000s. Their debut album Silent Alarm won many accolades in 2005, including the title of NME Album of the Year.

Signing to Wichita in 2004, their debut album was preceded by two EPs that were cult successes. Silent Alarm was finally released in February 2005, and instantly won widespread acclaim from the press. It featured fast, angular guitar lines, but with epic and emotional choruses that distinguished Bloc Party from other post-punk bands of the time. It went on to sell over 300,000 copies in the UK and achieved similar success upon release in the US. Many of the songs and singles - for example, "Helicopter", "Banquet" and "So Here We Are" - were also picked up to soundtrack television adverts, films and computer games.

In January 2007, Bloc Party released their second album, A Weekend in the City. Featuring a wider sonic palette and clearer lyrics, it was billed as a cutting commentary on modern life in London, including references to racism, recreational drug use, casual sex and terrorism. It generated mostly warm reviews, though most were less enthusiastic than they had been for Silent Alarm. Third album Intimacy was released in late 2008 and again received mixed but mostly good reviews for its movement into electronic rock experiments.
