Biography

Edit

Harold Elwin "Bo" Bice, Jr. is an American singer and musician who was the runner-up to Carrie Underwood in the fourth season of American Idol.

Bice (born November 1, 1975 in Huntsville, Alabama) was nicknamed "Bogart" as a newborn by his grandmother ("Granny Madge") because she thought he had "Humphrey Bogart eyes". His family continued to call him Bogart, but when Bice was in kindergarten he shortened it to "Bo" because he didn't think Bogart was cool. He got his first guitar at a very young age, started writing music at age 10. By age 14 he had a band called Spinning Jenny, and performed in pubs in England where he lived with his mother and stepfather. At 17, he moved back to United States, got his GED, attended college, formed various bands over the years, and became adept at several instruments. He released an album "Ex Gratia" (1999) with his band Purge, and "Recipe for Flavor" (2000) with his band SugarMoney.

After American Idol in 2005, he was signed by RCA, got married to Caroline Fisher, welcomed baby son Aidan that fall, and released his album called "The Real Thing" (produced by Clive Davis). Bice battled a life-threatening intestinal condition all through the Idol Season and endured many hospitalizations and three emergency surgeries over the next year and a half after Idol.

In fall 2006, Ben Stiller invited Bice to record the rock power ballad audio and music video for the title track of the Will Ferrell film "Blades of Glory" (produced by Stiller). Also in in fall 2006, Bice was presented with a gold record for "The Real Thing" not long after he parted ways with RCA. Bice suffered a near-death after his fall '06 surgery, and spent his long recovery period writing new songs and preparing for his next album.

On October 23, 2007, he released an album of his own songs called "See the Light" under his own independent record label called Sugar Money. Bice's music video--"Witness" (from his album "See the Light")--spent three consecutive weeks at #1 on VH1 "Top 20 Countdown" in December 2007 to close out the year. During that same period of time, "Witness" was ranked #2 on VH1 Video on Demand, and his "See the Light" was ranked #1 Album on the VH1 site.

Second son Caleb James was born on August 5, 2008. Throughout 2008-09, Bice continued touring and writing songs, interspersed with two trips to entertain U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Bice sang two tracks on the Brothers of the Southland CD (2009), and delivered a powerful performance on song called ‘Old Spanish Trail’ on the soundtrack for the critically acclaimed ‘Noble Things’ film (2009). He also continued to tour, write songs, and prepared for his next album.

Also in 2009. Bice was honored with the prestigious Lifetime Presidential Volunteer Service Award for volunteering more than 4,000 hours of his time for worthy causes.

Third son Ean Jacob was born in January 2010. Bice's Sugar Money record label teamed up with Time-Life for the album called "3" (release date May 18th, 2010).
