Overview Edit

The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration is a live double-album release in recognition of Bob Dylan's 30 years as a recording artist. Recorded in October, 1992 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, it captures most of a show full of celebrities, new and veteran, performing classic Dylan songs, before ending with a few performances from Bob Dylan himself. The house band for the show is the surviving members of Booker T. and the MG's: Booker T. Jones on organ, Donald "Duck" Dunn on bass, and Steve Cropper on guitar. Joining them is drummer Anton Fig filling in for the late Al Jackson, plus drummer Jim Keltner. Longtime Saturday Night Live bandleader G.E. Smith is the musical director for the show.

The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration, which reached #40 in the US and went gold, was released in August 1993 just before Dylan was about to deliver his second folk studio set inside of a year, World Gone Wrong. The concert was dubbed "Bobfest" by Neil Young at the beginning of his "All Along the Watchtower" cover.

An after-party was held at Tommy Makem's Irish Pavilion. At the party, Makem got up and sang songs that he and the Clancy Brothers had recorded which were favorites of Dylan's.

A VHS collection of the same name was released by Sony August 25, 1993.

4 stars Good times...
This concert, held back in October of '92, brought together a startling array of artists, whose presence alone was tribute to the musical significance of Bob Dylan. Thankfully, they all brought instruments with them, and somebody thought to record it. What we have here are some highlights of that show, which featured remarkably tight playing throughout. Some of the highlights are surprises, others quite expected: Willie Nelson gets the vibe of "What Was It You Wanted" just right, the Clancy Brot…

3 stars An excellent variety of interpretations
Dylan's songs have been interpreted by everyone from Trini Lopez to Jimi Hendrix, & so goes this excellent collection of legendary artists. My personal favs were Clapton, Winters, Johnny Cash, & Tom Petty. I was less impressed with John Cougar Mellencamp Smith Jones (or whatever he goes by now) & Eddie Vedder.

But it's definitely a keeper.
