Overview Edit

Empire Burlesque is singer-songwriter Bob Dylan's 23rd studio album, released by Columbia Records in June 1985.

The production techniques used on Empire Burlesque are typical of the 1980s, and contemporary critics find it to be one of the few Dylan albums that now sound quite dated. However, the songwriting is generally considered to be some of Dylan's strongest of the decade, with such notable compositions as "Tight Connection to My Heart" and "Dark Eyes."

Fans and critics continue to debate the album's merits, especially when compared to Dylan's classics of the 1960s and 1970s. It's one of Dylan's most controversial albums in terms of quality. The album peaked at #33 in the US and #11 in the UK.

The album was unavailable on iTunes until 2006, when it was added as a part of the Bob Dylan: The Collection series, but when that was discontinued in 2009, it was made available by itself.

4 stars Defending Empire Burlesque
Empire Burlesque has one thing in common with Self Portrait, Street Legal and every other Bob Dylan album that is panned more often than not: If it had been released by an little known upstart, it would have been accepted, maybe even acclaimed. The expectations are so perennial high for Dylan to produce another Blood on the Tracks that average, decent or even good albums he releases are often condemned to a negative responce because they do not stand-up to his highest accomplishments.

3 stars Not One of Dylan's Best, But Still a Personal Favorite
Maybe I like this album because it served as a soundtrack for my life when it came out in the Summer of '85. It contains some great songs and great singing. I think "Tight Connection to My Heart" is a Dylan classic. I prefer this song over its precursor ("Someone's Got a Hold of My Heart" on Bootleg Series 1-3). The lyrics, music, singing, and instrumentation are excellent.

"I'll Remember You" and "Emotionally Yours" are also great songs. Their lyrics are straight-forward rather than overtly poe…
