Biography

Edit

Robert Frederick Zenon "Bob" Geldof, KBE (born 5 October 1951) is an Irish singer, songwriter, author, and political activist. He rose to prominence as the lead singer of the Irish rock band The Boomtown Rats. Geldof was born and raised in Dún Laoghaire, Ireland, and attended Blackrock College. The Boomtown Rats had hits with his compositions "Rat Trap" and "I Don't Like Mondays". He co-wrote "Do They Know It's Christmas?", one of the best-selling singles of all time. He also starred as Pink in Pink Floyd's 1982 film Pink Floyd The Wall.

Geldof is widely recognised for his activism, especially anti-poverty efforts concerning Africa. In 1984, he and Midge Ure founded the charity supergroup Band Aid to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia. Geldof currently serves as an adviser to the ONE Campaign, founded by fellow Irish humanitarian Bono. A single father, Geldof has also been outspoken for the fathers' rights movement. Geldof has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, was granted an honorary knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, and is a recipient of the Man of Peace title which recognises individuals who have made "an outstanding contribution to international social justice and peace", among numerous other awards and nominations.

Geldof Disowns "Worst Songs In History"

Dec, 1 2010

It's one of the biggest selling singles of all time, was used to help raise money for famine-stricken Ethiopia, and features such distinguished luminaries as Bono, Sting, Phil Collins and George Michael, but the man responsible for Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas," Bob Geldof, (co-written with Ultravox's Midge Ure) is heartily fed up with it. In an interview with the UK's Daily Mail, the former Boomtown Rats frontman and Live Aid organizer said: "Any day soon, I will go to the supermarket, head to the meat counter and it will be playing. Every f***ing Christmas." The single was first released 26 years ago, and then re-released in 1989 and 2004. It proved the inspiration behind "We Are The World," the US multi-artist equivalent featuring the likes of Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. "I am responsible for two of the worst songs in history," Geldof told the newspaper, before adding that he frequently hears carol singers performing the tune. "Sometimes I think that's wild because I wrote it," he said. "Or else I am thinking how much I want them to stop because they are doing it so badly." *Love Christmas music?
