New Music Tuesday: Bob Marley and the Wailers Live Forever
Feb, 1 2011
Recorded 30 years ago while Bob Marley toured in support of his album Uprising, this two-disc release, Live Forever, is Marley's last recorded concert.
The show took place on September 23, 1980 in at the Stanley Theatre in Pittsburgh and is a 20-song collection that features many of Bob's most cherished and recognizable songs. No Woman No Cry, "Natural Mystic," and "Is This Love," are featured, as is the last song Marley ever performed live in concert: "Get Up Stand Up," his rally cry for equality.
Marley and the Wailers’ reggae blended rock and soul, blues and funk in a non-traditional, yet highly accessible way. Songs were anthems of hope, unity and love delivered by charismatic man who bled raw talent, yet exuded modesty. Marley's hard dance rhythms, allied to his militant lyrical stance, came in contrast to the excesses of mainstream rock of the 1970’s.
Further, the music made by Marley and his peers served to bridge the race gap in both the UK and America, as detailed in this fascinating article in the Guardian. Appropriately called a musical prophet by many, the message in Marley’s music mobilized a generation and his vision continues to inspire.
Demonstrated by this remarkable show, though his songs were of struggle, they contained within them an irrepressible joy and wisdom that surpassed the 36 years Marley spent on this earth.
