Overview Edit

Kaya is a roots reggae album released by Bob Marley and the Wailers in 1978. The album consists of tracks recorded alongside those present on the Exodus album in 1977. The album has a very relaxed, laid back sound, lacking much of the militant quality of the Wailers lyrically and musically. They received criticism for 'going soft' as a result of the general sound of the album as well as the theme: songs primarily revolving around love, as well as marijuana. The album's release coincided with the One Love Peace Concert, heralding Marley's triumphant return to Jamaica from exodus in London. Many of the songs present on this album, as well as its sister album Exodus, are rerecorded versions of older tracks present on albums like African Herbsman. Well known songs from the album include "Is This Love" and "Sun is Shining". Kaya reached the top five in the UK album charts.

5 stars A rare side of a legendary band
Kaya, was recorded at the same time as Exodus. 25 or so tracks were recorded and 2 albums were to be made. Exodus contained many of the harder songs, but also had some softer songs, but not as many here. for the Kaya album there were 15 tracks left, and the 10 originally released in 1978 were Love songs, and Homages to the Power of ganja. The band shows a rare different side that is actually quite beautiful. Out of all the Bob Marley and the Wailers album's this album sticks out in my mind becau…

3 stars Quite good, but not Marley's best
I have to say I don't really love this album. It's good, but surely not as good as others. All of the songs are love songs, so that in the long run the words sound a bit boring to me. All the strenght and power of Marley's political or social songs lacks in Kaya.

In the end, quite a good album, but if you want to know Bob Marley and don't have so much money to spend, buy Legend, Survival or Exodus.
