For a long time Bobby Womack was a behind-the-scenes songwriter and session guitarist, who wrote for Wilson Pickett and performed on work such as There's A Riot Goin' On (1971) by Sly & The Family Stone. Eventually striking out on his own, he achieved eleven Top Ten R&B singles, including two that topped that chart - "Woman's Gotta Have It" (1972) and "Lookin' For A Love" (1974). He has also recorded over 25 studio albums, including the acclaimed soundtrack to Across 110th Street (1972), The Poet (1982) and The Poet II (1984), the latter of which was voted Album of the Year by the NME.
