Biography

Edit

Boy George (born George Alan O'Dowd; 14 June 1961) is a British singer-songwriter who was part of the English New Romantic movement which emerged in the early 1980s. He helped give androgyny an international stage with the success of Culture Club during the 1980s. His music is often classified as blue-eyed soul, which is influenced by rhythm and blues and reggae. His 1990s and 2000s-era solo music has glam influences such as David Bowie and Iggy Pop. He also founded and was lead singer of Jesus Loves You during the period 1989–1992. Being involved in many activities (among them songwriting, DJing, writing books, designing clothes and photography), he has released fewer music recordings in the last decade.

On 11 May 2009, Boy George was released from prison at HMP Edmunds Hill in Newmarket, Suffolk, four months into a fifteen-month sentence for the assault and false imprisonment of a male escort, , in his East London flat. He was tagged and placed on a curfew for the balance of the sentence.

In December 2009, Boy George had a successful run of concerts at the Leicester Square Theatre in London's West End.

Stranger Than Fiction Friday: Boy George

Jan, 21 2011

Boy George, best known as the lead singer for the 1980’s English New Romantic band, Culture Club and the hit single, Karma Chameleon, is an art thief. No, wait, not really! But it turns out that the singer had unknowingly housed a plundered artifact from a church in Nicosia, Cyprus, for over two decades. Church officials reportedly noticed the portrait of Christ during a TV interview, where it hung in the background. George told the BBC News he is "happy the icon is going back to its original rightful home,” adding "I have always been a friend of Cyprus and have looked after the icon for 26 years." The image was originally displayed at the Church of St. Charalambos, in the Cypriot village of New Chorio-Kythrea. During the Turkish invasion of 1974, thousands of religious artifacts disappeared from the north of the island, allegedly sold on the black market. George claims he bought the icon from a reputable art dealer. Cypriot bishop Porfyrios of Neapolis said he felt "joy and gratitude" at the singer's return of the object. Boy George "contributed to the efforts of the Church of Cyprus for the repatriation of its stolen spiritual treasures,” the bishop told BBC Radio 4. "I have always been a friend of Cyprus," the singer said. "I look forward to seeing the icon on display in ... the Church of St. Charalambos from where it was stolen." -Court

Boy George

Sep, 12 2009

Hot on the heels of the PiL reunion story come two more news items of former stars planning comebacks. First up is Boy George, androgynous frontman of Culture Club, doyenne of the 80s and troubled latter-day club DJ. After a brief career break in jail following his conviction for the false imprisonment and assault of a male escort, he has emerged with unlikely plans to head back to the studio. His plan is to record a covers album using “songs that speak to me and have lyrics that reflect my personal journey and experiences.” Given the rocky nature of his personal journey lately, it ought to be an album of interesting choices. Another tumultuous path has been trod by the Bee Gee brothers, whose 45-year-long career was halted in its tracks after the death of Maurice Gibb in 2003. At the time of his death, the two remaining brothers said they would not perform as the Bee Gees again, but it seems they have reconsidered. Speaking on BBC radio, Robin Gibb announced that he and Barry were planning a series of live dates, confirming that: “We have got through the breakwater of the emotions and now we can go forward.”

Former Culture Club singer Boy George has been sentenced to spend 15 months in jail after being found guilty of false imprisonment and assault. The 47 year old pop star, real name George O'Dowd, was convicted over a month ago, but only discovered his punishment on Friday. In April 2007, he handcuffed a male escort to his bed and beat him, supposedly for stealing photos from his laptop, but the judge described it as "gratuitous violence." Boy George became a star in the early 80s thanks to his flamboyant image and worldwide hits like "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" and "Karma Chameleon." But he was arrested for heroin possession in 1986, and has continued to struggle with substance abuse and other legal problems. In 2005 he was arrested for possessing cocaine and sentenced to garbage duty in New York City. O'Dowd's lawyer defended his client, saying "He is the antithesis of the haughty bullying star. He was not himself when addled by the habitual and relatively long-lasting using of illegal drugs."
