Overview Edit

Deja Entendu is the second album from Long Island based band Brand New, released in 2003. Vastly different from their first release, Your Favorite Weapon, Deja Entendu was positively received by critics for the meaningful songs and lyrics. Déjà Entendu is French for 'already heard' (much like the term 'déjà vu' meaning 'already seen') and is a commentary on modern rock. Two singles were released from the album: "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows" and "Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades," latter of which is a staple to most of their live shows.

The lyrics in this album are notably more mature than their previous record, portraying an enhanced feeling of fear, paranoia, and angst. Such examples include the rigors of endless touring ("I Will Play My Game Beneath the Spin Light"), Lacey's struggle with his grandfather's lung cancer ("Guernica"), and the emotional and psychological tolls of sex ("Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades"). Also notable is the concept of a dual storyline that exists in "Good to Know That if I Ever Need Attention All I Have to Do Is Die," where one story line reflects a writer's life and the other is the story he writes. Along with the title their first song "Tautou" is said to be French related, and named after the French actress Audrey Tautou..

There is a little-known 12th song from this album entitled: "Flying at Tree Level Version 1.0." The song was recorded during the Deja Entendu session, but didn't make it onto the album, instead appearing later on the Beer: The Movie compilation soundtrack.

The entire album was leaked, mostly unmixed, several months before release without song titles, and including the 12th track "Flying at Tree Level v1.0." Although most tracks are similar to the final release, the track "Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades" has organ during the verses, which the final version doesn't.

There are two pressings of the vinyl. The first pressing is of 1000, and has a barcode on the back of the gatefold. The second pressing does not have a barcode.

This album ranked at #75 for Top 100 Albums of 2003 by Rate Your Music.

The album was certified Gold on May 29, 2007, nearly 4 years after its original release.

The song "Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades" was featured on the Xbox versions of the video games Tiger Woods PGA Tour and NHL 2004. The song "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows" was featured on the PlayStation 2 versions of NHL 2004 and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004.

4 stars Deja Entendu? Hardly...
Translate the title of Brand New's brand new album (heh) from French to English and you come up with "already heard." Fortunately for music listeners 'round the world, this is hardly the case. After my third listen, I believe it's safe to say that Deja Entendu can generally be described as "experimental". And emo. Very very emo.

Admittedly, after giving the disc an initial spin, I was shocked. What the heck happened to my Brand New?! Where's the poppy catchiness?! WHERE IS IT?! If any of you kid…

3 stars Very Different
This cd is very different from the first. It's like they went from taking back sunday sound to somthing corporate type music, but it is still very good. I recommend to buy the first cd first, and then buy the second.
