Biography

Edit

The longest and poshest name in music - Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno - is often just abbreviated to just 'Eno', and belongs to a man with an incredible record of innovation as a musician. A multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, composer, music theorist and producer, he has been involved in the best work of several prominent artists, as well as pioneering ambient music with his own solo work.

Brian Eno was prolific through the 1970s. As a member of seminal art-rock group Roxy Music, he was involved with two classic records: Roxy Music (1972) and For Your Pleasure (1973). As a solo artist, he released four excellent albums that combined art-rock with early electronic textures: Here Come The Warm Jets (1973), Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) (1974), Another Green World (1975) and Before And After Science (1977). In 1973 and 1975, Eno and Robert Fripp released two innovative ambient/drone albums, called Fripp & Eno (No Pussyfooting) and Evening Star. These, combined with Discreet Music (1975), and the Ambient series, starting with Music For Airports (Ambient 1) (1978), pioneered ambient music.

Meanwhile, he was collaborating with former Velvet Underground founder John Cale on his solo work, and in 1978, produced Devo's highly praised debut album, Q. Are We Not Men? A. We Are Devo!. In Germany, he was working with David Bowie to co-write and produce 'The Berlin Trilogy'. Low (1977), "Heroes" (1977) and Lodger (1979) are often considered among Bowie's very best work, but Eno's influence can be clearly heard - for example, the long, sythnesized atmospherics of Low's B-side are unmistakeably Eno. Simultaneously, he was producing three classic new wave albums for Talking Heads in New York: More Songs About Buildings And Food (1978), Fear Of Music (1979) and Remain In Light (1980). In 1981 he collaborated with Talking Heads' David Byrne for My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts, another highly innovative and widely acclaimed art-rock album. Eno went on to co-produce four of U2's most successful albums: The Unforgettable Fire (1984), The Joshua Tree (1987), Achtung Baby (1991) and All That You Can't Leave Behind (2000).

He has also worked with other acclaimed musicians such as Kevin Ayers, Robert Wyatt, Television, Depeche Mode and Primal Scream. Eno even wrote and recorded the 6-second 'Windows sound' which chimed when users logged-in to Windows 95. Brian Eno's influence on modern music has often gone unnoticed, but very few people have been involved in as many classic albums as he has.

Among other important collaborations that are important to mention are:

Brian Eno´s contribution with Genesis´ mythical concept album THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY (1974) in diverse manners that were credited as enosification.

This collaboration ended in an important invitation towards lead vocalist-drummer of Genesis´ Phil Collins to be percussionist on his album BEFORE & AFTER SCIENCE (1977)

Most recently has joined talents to british rock band COLDPLAY producing their latest releases.

Brian Eno Announces New Album For Warp

Aug, 24 2010

Ambient pioneer and super-producer Brian Eno has announced a new studio album, his first since the acclaimed David Byrne collab Everything That Happens Will Happen Today. Small Craft On A Milk Sea was recorded with long-term collaborators Leo Abrahams and Jon Hopkins and will be released on November 2 on the cult British electronica label Warp Records. "It contains the fruits of several years of jams between the three of us," Abrahams wrote in a recent blog post. "I've not heard anything quite like it – it sounds 'live' and 'alien' at the same time. Some things have been permitted to survive, which only Brian would have had the courage to let go, and it's so much the better for it." Few other details about the album have emerged, with Eno himself silent on its contents. As well as the standard CD and MP3 editions, there's a limited edition vinyl edition available for €70 ($90), and an extra special collector's edition for €350 ($450); for Brian Enoraks only.
