Built to Spill are a US indie band formed by guitarist, Doug Martsch when he left Treepeople in 1992. It was his intention to be the only permanent member, introducing new musicians the band for each album, however the band’s line-up remained fairly stable over the course of the six studio albums released until 2006. The series of albums began with 1993’s Ultimate Alternative Wavers and by the release of their third album, Perfect From Now On (1997) – their first for a major label – they were the recipients of significant critical praise.
The band has been cited as an influence by many other notable bands of the genre, including Modest Mouse and Death Cab for Cutie.
