New Music Tuesday: Cage the Elephant
Jan, 11 2011
Kentucky rockers, Cage the Elephant’s sophomore effort hits shelves today. The 13-track album, Thank You, Happy Birthday, boldly announces a new-found maturity without sacrificing a sense of playfulness and discovery typical of a young band.
Cage the Elephant was discovered in 2007 at South by Southwest music conference in Austin, TX. Shortly thereafter the band signed to Relentless Records and moved to London to cut their teeth, further honing their energetic melody-heavy punk.
The 2009 self-titled debut Cage the Elephant spawned three top five singles: “Back Against the Wall,” “In One Ear,” and the slinky rocker, Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked, used in TV and games. Before they knew it, they had become festival staple, playing Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and Outside Lands.
In the two years since their debut, amid serious touring, the band managed to write and record this new release. It’s clear the quintet has a fondness for the indie rock of the 1980’s and the ‘90’s grungy, lo-fi vibe, counting among their influences Pavement, Pixies, Mudhoney, The Shins, Butthole Surfers, and Cake.
