Camel are an English prog rock band formed in 1971 by guitarist Andy Latimer, drummer Andy Ward, bassist Doug Ferguson and keyboard player Peter Bardens.
It was their second album 1974's Mirage that brought Camel to the attention of the critics and public in the US, where it found a receptive audience on the west coast. After several more prog albums the band brought jazz into the mix with their 1977 album Rain Dances. In 1982, despite the relegation of prog rock to the margins, the band had their most commercially successful record in The Single Factor. However they split up two albums later in 1985.
Andy Latimer kept the spirit of Camel alive, writing, recording and distributing 1991's Dust and Dreams album himself. The album was well received by fans, as was the accompanying tour. With Camel back on track further albums were popular with fans, including those in Eastern Europe who were now more accessible thanks to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Camel are currently working on a new studio album due for release in 2008.
